Ms. Candy Darling left us on March 21, 1974 at the young age of 29.
Candy was a true superstar – a delicate, tragic heroine living her life in a virtual Hollywood movie, endlessly in search of true love.
Her funeral in New York City drew a huge crowd of celebrities and friends. Gloria Swanson saluted her coffin.
Candy’s deathbed letter read,
“Unfortunately before my death I had no desire left for life … I am just so bored by everything. You might say bored to death. Did you know I couldn’t last. I always knew it. I wish I could meet you all again.”
I’m gonna watch the bluebirds fly over my shoulder
I’m gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I’m older
What do you think I’d see
If I could walk away from me?
– Lou Reed, ‘Candy Says’
