WISH TREE FOR NEW YORK
Park Avenue Armory, February 2025…
There are 92 Yoko Ono Wish Trees on exhibit at the Park Avenue Armory in NYC, prefacing the artist turning 92 this week. Symposiums on Yoko’s life and work spanned two days and there were two tribute concerts.
Wish Tree is exhibited over four days –
from February 14th – 17th 2025.

Tables with large white wish tags and pencils are scattered amidst the trees. People were deliberating, meditating and carefully planning what to wish for – as if they were contemplating a prayer for the lighting of a candle at an altar. But this will not flicker out like a flame. This wish is indelible. This wish will come true!
Each person’s countenance varies when they pick up the pencil and decide what to wish for. Some write quickly, and many are deliberate for a while. Some faces look joyful, some wistful and some tearful.
Observing the process over three days imbues the importance and weight that this Ono work carries. It’s not only about tying your own wish to a tree, but also reading the wishes of others. The range of desire is wide and revealing. There are frivolous wishes, and heartbreaking ones. A multitude of wishes were for world peace. Knowing that we already have (and take for granted) some things that others are wishing for is very sobering.
It was incredible to see how many people wrote that they were lonely, or wished for their friends or partners to recover from cancer. Some were wishing for a mate to love them. There were heartbreaking wishes – that their mom hadn’t committed suicide, or for their dad to heal from the loss of mom. For a family member or themselves to find a job.
Children wished to have a new dog or cat! One wished for a pet flamingo and a pet swan, and that they should grow up together and be friends. Some wrote. “I wish I could meet Yoko Ono,” and others wished that John was still here with us.

There is a great opportunity to study human desire and cravings in Yoko’s very important piece. I hope that someone curates all the wishes and does a valuable study of what is missing in our lives, and how it can be fulfilled.
Of course, the wishes will all be sent to Yoko and placed inside the base of Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland. The trees will all be planted in Central Park when the exhibition is over.
Thanks to all who attended my reading at the Armory!
