Beautiful Darling

Celebrating the birthday of Candy Darling

who left us on March 21, 1974 at the young age of 29.

“I’m a thousand different people. Every one is real”

– Candy Darling

On this day, November 24th, in 1944, Candy Darling was born James Lawrence Slattery in Forest Hills, Queens.

Candy was a true superstar –  a delicate, tragic heroine living her life in a virtual Hollywood movie, endlessly in search of true love.

Her funeral in New York City drew a huge crowd of celebrities and friends. Hollywood legend Gloria Swanson saluted her coffin.

Candy’s deathbed letter read,

“Unfortunately before my death I had no desire left for life … I am just so bored by everything. You might say bored to death. Did you know I couldn’t last. I always knew it. I wish I could meet you all again.”

I’m gonna watch the bluebirds fly over my shoulder
I’m gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I’m older
What do you think I’d see
If I could walk away from me?

– Lou Reed, ‘Candy Says’
